PRIVACY POLICY
Effective Date: September 21, 2026  |  Last Updated: September 21, 2026  |  App Version: 1.0
HISN (حِصْن) is an Islamic-centered app for restricting distracting and harmful apps. A parent can manage a child's phone, and an adult can restrict their own phone with the help of an accountability partner. This Privacy Policy explains what information HISN handles, where it is kept, and how to delete it. It is written in plain language, not legal jargon.

1. Who We Are

HISN is an independent application developed by a member of the American Muslim community. It is not a corporation, it is not funded by venture capital, and it is not designed to profit from your data.

For questions about this policy, contact us at: hisnapp@gmail.com

2. What Data HISN Collects

The short version: HISN keeps only what it needs to link a parent's phone to a child's phone, or a person to their accountability partner. We do not sell data. We do not run ads. We do not use analytics or tracking. You can delete your account and everything stored with it from inside the app at any time.

Data stored on our servers (Google Firebase):

Account email and passwordThe email address you sign up with. Your password is handled by Firebase Authentication and is never visible to us.To sign you in on Parent, Self-Control and Partner modes
Names you type inThe parent name and child name you enter during setupTo label the family link on the parent's dashboard
Family link and device recordA six-character linking code, which apps or categories are restricted, schedules (prayer, bedtime, school, Quran time), daily limit, whether protection is on, and when the child's phone was last seen onlineSo changes a parent makes reach the child's phone
Installed apps list (Android child devices only)The names and package names of apps installed on the child's phoneSo the parent can choose which apps to restrict
Selection counts (iPhone child devices)Only HOW MANY apps, categories and websites are restricted. Apple does not reveal which apps they are, and HISN never uploads Apple's selection tokens. To show the parent that a selection exists
RequestsA child's request to open an app or change a setting; a Self-Control user's request to their partner, including the reason and reflection answers they write (the written answers are readable only by the person who wrote them)So the parent or partner can approve or deny

Apple Screen Time selection (iPhone)The apps chosen in Apple's picker stay on the phone that chose them

Data we do NOT collect:

3. How HISN Works on Android — Accessibility Service

Important disclosure about Accessibility Service: HISN uses Android's Accessibility Service to see which app is currently open on the device. This is required to block apps in real time. We are required by Google Play policy to disclose this clearly.

HISN's Accessibility Service detects when a restricted app is opened and closes it, prevents access to settings that would disable HISN, and applies your schedules. It does NOT read or record what you type, access messages or content, take screenshots, or monitor browsing history. The name of the app currently on screen is processed on the device and is not sent to our servers.

4. How HISN Works on iPhone — Apple Screen Time

On iPhone, HISN uses Apple's Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity frameworks. Apps are chosen on the phone being managed, in Apple's own picker. Apple gives HISN only anonymous tokens for that choice: HISN cannot see which apps were chosen, and the tokens never leave the device. Restrictions are applied by iOS itself.

5. Device Administrator Permission (Android)

HISN requests Device Administrator permission so a child cannot uninstall it. It does NOT allow HISN to wipe your device or enforce password policies, and a parent can revoke it at any time from HISN's Settings.

6. Prayer Times — External API

HISN calculates Salah times using the Aladhan API (aladhan.com). The app sends the coordinates of the city you selected — not your real GPS location — and no personal information.

7. Children's Privacy

HISN is set up by a parent. A child's phone is linked with a code the parent creates; the child does not create an account, and does not enter a name, email address or any other personal information. The child's phone signs in with an anonymous identifier so that only that phone and the parent's account can read or change its record. The information kept about a child's device is listed in section 2 and is visible only to the linked parent.

A parent can delete all of it at any time by deleting their account in the app (section 9). HISN does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 beyond what the parent sets up, and complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

8. Security and Third-Party Services

Server data is protected by access rules: a device record can be read only by the parent who created it and the child phone linked to it; a partnership only by its two members.

9. Your Rights — Deleting Your Account and Data

You can delete your account from inside the app: Settings → Delete Account (Parent and Self-Control modes) or Delete Account at the bottom of the Partner screen. This permanently deletes your account, your family link and child device records, the prayer log, your partnerships, your own requests, and your notification token. It takes effect immediately and cannot be undone.

If you cannot use the app, email hisnapp@gmail.com from the address on your account and we will delete it for you within 30 days. You may also ask us for a copy of the data held about your account.

10. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the Effective Date at the top of this page and notify users through the app. We will never make changes that reduce your privacy protections without clear advance notice.

11. Halal Commitment

Our commitment to you: HISN was built as an act of service to the Muslim community. We do not monetize your data. We do not sell information about Muslim families to anyone. This is a trust — and we take that seriously.
